Wanda Avery
Wanda Avery, 85, of Cranford died Jan. 30 in St. Barnabas Medical
Center, Livingston. Born in Newark, Mrs. Avery lived for the last
58 years in the house, she and her late husband, Benjamin, built
together in Cranford. Surviving are a daughter, Diana Alpaugh; two
sons, Benjamin and Kenney; a brother, Thomas Banach; seven
grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The Dooley Funeral
Home, Cranford, handled the arrangements.
Arthur SanGiuliano
Arthur SanGiuliano, 93, a lifelong resident of Cranford, died Jan.
26 in Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Rahway. Mr.
SanGiuliano owned and operated Art’s Shoe Repair, Cranford, for
more than 50 years. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Mr.
SanGiuliano was a member of the Cranford United Methodist Church,
the F&AM Atlas Pythagoras Lodge 10, Westfield, the Cranford
Senior Citizens Friday Club and the Mountainside Elks Club.
Surviving are a daughter, Elaine Magee; three grandchildren, nine
great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. The Dooley
Funeral Home, Cranford, handled the arrangements.
Armand van Gelder
Armand A. van Gelder, 83, a lifelong resident of Cranford, died on
Jan. 26. Mr. van Gelder graduated from Cranford High School in
1944. He enlisted in the Army and in May, 1944, he saw combat in
Europe with the 102nd Infantry Division. Mr. van Gelder transferred
to the Military Police platoon. After the war, he transferred to
the First Infantry Division and became a prison guard at the
Nuremberg War Crimes Tribunal. Mr. van Gelder attended the First
Division Military Intelligence School, Germany. After his discharge
on July 29, 1946, he joined the Cranford Auxiliary Police as a
patrolman. Mr. van Gelder retired as a captain and commanding
officer in 1991 after 40 years. He was a member of the American
Legion of Clark. In 1953, Mr. van Gelder joined the United States
Post Office in Cranford as a letter carrier and retired in 1983
after 30 years of service. Surviving are his wife, Helen Specht van
Gelder; two daughters, Susan van Gelder and Lois Mandato; a sister,
Marie Gore; two grandchildren and a great-grandchild. The Gray
Funeral Home, Cranford, handled the arrangements.
